How it happens
The old way hands over the seller's own Google Account and password. Google's account recovery looks at the original device, phone and recovery email; until all of that is changed, the seller can file recovery and take it back.
How far changing details helps
A new password, recovery email, phone and 2-step verification reduce the risk, but the account is still someone else's Google Account and you have to keep watching for recovery alerts.
Why official transfer is different
- Ownership moves to your own Google Account; nothing depends on the seller's login.
- The seller's Google Account can then be removed in Users and permissions.
- Since 27 May 2026 this is the only owner change Google accepts.
What about the 7-day hold
Any member can cancel during the hold; once you start the wizard, others cannot. Agree the milestones up front and put payment milestones in the order.
After the handover
- Remove members you do not need.
- Turn on 2-step verification.
- Update developer contact details.
- Check signing keys and policy status.
